Aged repainted gates for a Phoenix Home
A pair of ancient gates purchased in India and installed as this Phoenix home’s front entrance had deteriorated with the harsh desert sun to the point where the wood was in danger of breaking down. In order to protect them while retaining their antique character, I repainted them to reproduce how they had looked when originally purchased – flaking layers of paint. First sanded and then sealed to keep the existing paint bonded to the wood, I applied new paint to cover most of the exposed wood using different colors to simulate the multi-layered look. I then added 2 coats of a tinted clear exterior varnish to add to the antiquing and provide extra protection.
